The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unbroken, inactive volcanic caldera in the world. Its floor covers about 260 square kilometers and is enclosed by walls rising up to 600 meters.

Around 25,000 large animals live on the crater floor all year. It is one of the best places in Tanzania to see the endangered black rhino, along with lions, elephants, buffalo and hyenas. The wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Maasai families still graze their cattle there, living alongside the wildlife.
