Overview
This day hike follows the lower section of the Marangu route up to Mandara Hut (2,720m), then returns the same way — a good way to get a real taste of Kilimanjaro's terrain without committing to a multi-day climb.
It's about a 45km, 1-hour drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate (1,879m), where you'll register and pay the park entrance fee before starting. From the gate, it's 8km each way to Mandara Hut — roughly 3 to 4 hours per direction through Kilimanjaro's forest zone.

HIKING MARANGU ROUTE
Raining Forest
On the way from the Marangu gate to Mandara hut, you will cross the rain forest which is a dense forest, pure green with a lot of species of plants. If you are lucky you can see Blue Monkeys and black and white Colobus Monkeys.
Maundi Crater
It just takes 15 minutes to walk from Mandara to Maundi Crater. This place offers a good view of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks and also a good view of the Kenyan side ad lake Chala and Jipe. During the eruption, the pressure was not enough to force magma to get out hence instead of rising up it formed a crater.
