Overview
This day hike takes you up the first section of the Marangu route to Mandara Hut (2,720 m) and back, a great way to experience Kilimanjaro without a full climb.
From Moshi it is about an hour's drive (45 km) to Marangu Gate (1,879 m), where you register and pay the park fee. The walk to Mandara Hut is 8 km each way, about 3 to 4 hours in each direction through the rainforest, with a short side trip to Maundi Crater.

MARANGU GATE TO MANDARA HUT AND MAUNDI CRATER
From Marangu Gate you walk through the rainforest, a dense and very green forest full of plant life, where you may see blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys. At Mandara Hut you stop for lunch before a 15-minute walk to Maundi Crater, which offers fine views of Kibo and Mawenzi and, across the border in Kenya, Lakes Chala and Jipe. The crater formed when an eruption lacked the force to push magma to the surface. You then walk back down to the gate.
