Overview
Lake Manyara sits at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, and the park is best known for its tree-climbing lions — an unusual behavior that isn't fully understood, but is reliably spotted here more than almost anywhere else in Africa.
The lake itself draws large numbers of flamingos, pelicans and cormorants depending on water levels, and the park's mix of groundwater forest, open plains and the lakeshore gives a genuinely varied day of game viewing in a relatively compact area.

Indeed, it was thought for a long time that the Lake Manyara National Park is the only place where lions can be found with this atypical behaviour of climbing trees. Baboons and vervet monkeys are also found amongst the forested areas and in the more open spaces, giraffes nibble at the fres
