Getting the balance right between the bush and the beach
Combining a mainland safari with time on Zanzibar is one of the most popular ways to see Tanzania, and one of the most rewarding. Here is how to plan it well.
Usually the safari first, then Zanzibar. Early game drives followed by lazy beach days feels natural. The other way round, you leave the beach for early alarms.
A good starting point is five to seven days on safari and three to four on Zanzibar. The right balance depends on which part matters more to you.
A short domestic flight links the northern parks with Zanzibar. It is quick and far easier than a long drive.
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so the same entry and health rules generally apply. See our yellow fever guide for details.
