Beaches, spices and the lanes of Stone Town
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous group of islands off Tanzania's coast. It was once famous as the "Spice Island" for its cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon, and today it is loved for its white sand and clear turquoise water.
The old capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its maze of narrow streets reflects centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian and Indian history. Even if you came for the beach, give it at least a day.
The coasts are quite different. The east coast has wide white beaches where the tide goes far out, while the north and west have calmer water that stays deeper through the day. Choosing the right area makes a big difference to your stay.
The dry seasons, June to October and December to February, are the best times to visit and the easiest to combine with a mainland safari.
Zanzibar is the perfect ending to a Tanzania trip. Most guests spend their final days here, relaxing by the sea after the early mornings and long drives of safari.
