Northern Circuit Guide

How Tanzania's classic safari route fits together

The Northern Circuit is Tanzania's most famous safari route. It links Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, the parks most people imagine when they think of Africa, and it is where most first-time visitors begin.

Why These Parks Go Together

They are all within a few hours' drive of each other and of Arusha, the safari capital. In one smooth trip you can move from baobab country to a volcanic crater to endless open plains.

How Many Days?

Seven to ten days gives you proper time in each park. Five- or six-day versions are popular too, but they cover the ground faster and leave less time in each place.

What Each Park Brings

Tarangire has elephants and baobabs. Manyara has tree-climbing lions and birdlife. Ngorongoro has an extraordinary number of animals in one crater. The Serengeti has the great plains and, at the right time, the Great Migration.

Adding More

A Kilimanjaro climb before the safari or a Zanzibar beach stay afterwards both fit neatly around the Northern Circuit. We have been planning these combinations for more than 13 years.
