Time with one of Africa's last hunter-gatherer peoples
Lake Eyasi lies at the foot of the Rift Valley near the Ngorongoro highlands. It is home to the Hadzabe (Hadza), one of the last hunter-gatherer peoples in Africa. Their language uses click sounds, and their way of life has changed little over generations.
Most visits start at dawn, when you join Hadzabe men on a hunt or the women as they gather roots and berries. This is their normal daily routine rather than a show, and arriving early gives you the most authentic experience.
Many visits also include the neighboring Datoga people, who are skilled blacksmiths using techniques handed down through generations.
Treat the day as a meeting between people, not a photo opportunity. The more patience and respect you bring, the richer the experience for everyone.
Lake Eyasi is about two to three hours by road from Karatu, near Ngorongoro, so it is easy to add to a northern safari.
