Best Kilimanjaro Route for Beginners

Choosing a first Kilimanjaro route that gets you to the top

With six main routes, first-time climbers often ask which is the easiest. Here is our honest view.

Ask About Acclimatization, Not Difficulty

None of the routes is technical; they are all walking paths. What really differs is how much time you get to adjust to the altitude, and that affects your chances far more than the terrain.

Machame

A favorite for first climbs, with beautiful scenery, a sensible length of six or seven days and a good acclimatization profile.

Lemosho

A little longer, even better for acclimatization and quieter than Machame in the first days. An excellent choice if you can spare the extra day.

Marangu

The only route with huts instead of tents, which suits people who don't like camping. It is also usually the shortest, which means less time to adjust.

Our Recommendation

For most first-timers we suggest Machame or Lemosho over Marangu, because the extra days matter more than a hut bed. Tell us your fitness and timeframe, and we will help you choose.
