Best Parks for Big Cats in Tanzania

Where to find lions, leopards and cheetahs

If big cats are top of your list, some parks give you a much better chance than others. Here is where to look.

Lions

Found across the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, lions are the easiest of the big cats to see. Lake Manyara adds a twist, with lions that like to rest in trees.

Leopards

The most secretive of the three, leopards live alone and often sleep in trees by day. The central and northern Serengeti, especially along rivers and around rocky kopjes, gives a good chance, though never a certain one.

Cheetahs

The Serengeti's open plains are perfect for cheetahs, which hunt by sight over long distances. Dry months, when the grass is short, are best.

No Guarantees, but Better Odds

No park can promise a sighting, because these are wild animals. More days and more than one park are what really improve your chances.

A Big-Cat Safari

Combining the Serengeti with the Ngorongoro Crater gives you an excellent chance of all three. Tell us big cats are your priority, and we will plan the route around them.
