The e-visa is simplest

Most travelers apply online in advance through Tanzania's official immigration e-visa website. At the time of writing, a single-entry tourist visa costs 50 USD and is valid for up to 90 days, while some nationalities, including US passport holders, need a multiple-entry visa costing 100 USD. Processing usually takes up to about ten days, so apply at least two to three weeks before you travel.

What you need to apply

• A passport valid for at least six more months, with at least one blank page.
• A recent passport photo in the required format.
• Proof of a return or onward ticket.
• The completed online form and the visa fee, paid by card.

Visa on arrival: a backup, not a plan
