What to Expect Day by Day on the Machame Route
The Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route” for its challenging but rewarding nature, it offers stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and excellent acclimatization opportunities. At Abakombe Tours, we guide you step-by-step to the summit. Here’s what you can expect each day on the Machame Route.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
- Altitude: 1,800m to 3,000m
- Distance: ~11 km
- Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Your adventure begins at Machame Gate, where we complete park registration and meet our porters and guides. The trek starts through lush rainforest, with a gradual but steady ascent. Expect humid conditions and possible rain before reaching Machame Camp.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
- Altitude: 3,000m to 3,850m
- Distance: ~5 km
- Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
We leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone. The trail is steeper today, with views opening up to the Shira Plateau. By afternoon, you’ll reach Shira Camp with breathtaking views of Kibo Peak.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
- Altitude: 3,850m to 4,600m (Lava Tower), then down to 3,960m
- Distance: ~10 km
- Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
This is an important acclimatization day. We hike up to Lava Tower for lunch, exposing the body to higher altitude, before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” approach greatly improves summit success rates.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Altitude: 3,960m to 4,035m
- Distance: ~5 km
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
The day begins with the Barranco Wall, a fun and challenging scramble with amazing views. The rest of the trek is a series of ups and downs across alpine desert before reaching Karanga Camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Altitude: 4,035m to 4,640m
- Distance: ~4 km
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
A shorter but steep hike today brings you to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. You’ll rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the final push in the early hours of the next morning.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then to Mweka Camp
- Altitude: 4,640m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,100m
- Distance: ~17 km
- Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Summit day starts around midnight. The climb to Stella Point is steep and challenging, but sunrise over the glaciers will take your breath away. From there, it’s a gentle walk to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrations and photos, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp for the night.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
- Altitude: 3,100m to 1,640m
- Distance: ~10 km
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
A final descent through the rainforest brings you to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. It’s time to celebrate your achievement!
